Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s press secretary apologized Monday for insulting a crowd of pensioners who had booed her boss.

Carmen Martínez Castro, Rajoy’s communications secretary, had said to a party aide: “How I would like to give them the finger and say f**k off.” Her comment was picked up by a press microphone, El Español reported.

She was speaking at an event in Alicante on Saturday, at which pensioners were protesting against Rajoy and his conservative government, calling for a rise in payments from the state for the elderly.

Martínez Castro apologized Monday, telling Cope radio she was making a joke with a friend during a private conversation. She said sorry to those who “felt offended.”

Opposition parties called for Martínez Castro to resign because of the gaffe. José Luís Ábalos, a Socialist MP, said her comments “showed a lack of respect to pensioners,” according to the Times.
